99% chance he’s a good friend or family of a school board member. >>

I was thinking the same thing. There are plenty of young parents out there with good eyesight, judgment and reflexes who can do a much better job than grandpa who is so old he can collect his both his full social security and his full pay. I’m sure he was a hard-working democrat on someone’s campaign!!

I once knew an alcoholic who was a bus driver and today I know a bartender in a nice town who gets taxi-cab drivers and school-bus drives as his afternoon customers, I’m not kidding.

The NTSB has primary responsibility for aviation and railroad incidents, but usually only investigates "ordinary" motor vehicle crashes if they involve significant fatalities and/or property damage. Typically, they will only get involved in motor vehicle crashes if they think the incident can give guidance on safety issues that would apply elsewhere.

Ironically, it sounds like the NTSB isn't going to investigate this crash because one of the key recommendations they made after other similar crashes (mandatory seatbelts for school buses) apparently saved a lot of lives here.

For what it's worth ...

The county prosecutor announced today that the driver is facing criminal charges stemming from this crash.

The Bus Driver just got charged.

"Authorities charged Hudy Muldrow Sr., 77, with vehicular homicide, also known as death by auto, in the deaths of 10-year-old student Miranda Vargas and 51-year-old teacher Jennifer Williamson. More than 40 others were injured, some seriously, in the May 17 crash between the bus and a dump truck."
