Most of familys second income is spent on extra clothes for work, more convenience foods and eating out, daycare and babysitters, and a myriad of other little extra expenses that re incurred.

Well, the accounting works.
Maybe a net increase of 25% over one income , which can be made up with a stay at home mom who does the housekeeping etc, herself, like the rest of us homeschoolers did.
And besides, as was pointed out upthread, part time jobs can help supplement enough income.
Sneer away, but it can be done if the parents want to, if they put enough value on their children instead of the free daycare.
