Top Republicans consider amping up the pressure on Paul Ryan to step down as Speaker of the House before midterm elections.Top Republicans in Congress and the White House have in recent days entertained a plan to push House Speaker Paul Ryan out of his post over the summer, in an effort to clear the way for his presumed successor, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, to assume the speakership.
A source involved in the conversations and who has discussed the idea with President Donald Trump told THE WEEKLY STANDARD that Trump believes there is merit to the plan, but has not formed a final position. McCarthy has been weighing the effort alongside a small group of trusted advisers, considering the pros and cons of forcing Ryan's hand, and debating the best time to launch the effort. As of last week he had not spoken to Ryan about the idea, the source said.
Proponents say that the benefits are twofold. It would trigger a vote to replace Ryan, giving McCarthy an opening to become speaker of the House that is, if he can avoid crashing and burning on takeoff like he did in 2015. But it would also force Democrats to cast votes for or against Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a favorite target of Republican campaign strategists, to be speaker. That vote could then be used against vulnerable Democrats during the height of campaign season, the source said.

IF Ryan had an ounce of decency and integrity, he would have immediately stepped aside when he announced that he was leaving his position as a member of the House.
He can step aside now.
IF.
Solid gold.
The senate is the biggest problem.
why do they think that McCarthy would be an improvement over Ryan? Goodbye frying pan, hello fire.
Can’t argue with you on that. McConnell is as dirty as the day is long. Same thing can be said for his butt-plug, John “Wayne” McCornyn.
McCarthy will be as much of a RINO as Ryan. Let your Republican Congresscritter know to vote for Scalise - now or in January.
Ryan knows whats coming and getting out of town!
Balderdash

Not seeing the House doing ANY significant these days. Considering how the DOJ has been trying to SET UP elected members of Congress, why hasn’t the House, under Speaker Ryan’s leadership, pulled out the DOJ budget and started SLASHING the money for departments who are acting this way?
Nunes and Rowdy were being set up to be accused of leaks after several meetings with the DOJ until they figured it out!!
Speaker of the House is, what, third in line to succeed a prez...?
I’m having all kinds of scary thoughts this morning.
I want someone other than Ryan as third in line to the presidency.
The democrats are probably still having orgasmic daydreams about their coup against Trump.
Step 1: Retake the House and the Senate.
Step 2: Elect Hillary as Speaker of the House (third in line for her rightful position as President-for-Life).
Step 3: Impeach Trump and Pence.
Step 4: Convict both Trump and Pence, and remove them both from office.
Step 5: Hold the Hillary Inauguration that they have been been planning ever since she agreed to stand by her man.
We do. The uniparty doesn’t.
I would love to see them do this now, and make a new rule where the winner becomes speaker and the #2 becomes minority leader.
The GOP would win with nearly anyone being better than Ryan, and the Dems would be forced to vote for Pelosi, if they wanted her to remain minority leader- or finally toss her sorry ass out.
“Not seeing the House doing ANY significant these days.”...
“These days”??????? When have they actually done ANYTHING of significance that is helping/has helped any of us? When? Who? What?
Actually he Speaker is second in line after VP. Only way the Speaker becomes President is for both the President and VP become vacant at the same time. Remember before they took Nixon out they removed the VP first then appointed Ford as VP.
Excellent point, Dave!!
When you consider all the useful things the House COULD do, it is very frustrating.
