You understand it wrong. The Supreme Court ruled a couple of years ago that states can't have laws that require judges to give life sentences to minors, but minors can absolutely still receive life sentences from judges. A guy who murdered ten people is going to get life in prison, even if it's "only" thirty years per victim.
