Tom Wolfe, the white suit wearing iconic author of works such as Bonfire of the Vanities and The Right Stuff has died on Tuesday in New York City.
Omg. You are right. I meant to say A Man in Full, but started thinking about Bonfires. Sorry
Easy enough to do! SO many good books from one man.
“The Painted Word”. That little book by Wolfe exposed the modern art movement for the trash it was/is.
I’ve never read him. When I should’ve been reading his works, I was reading Solzhenitsyn.
Great post, thanks for telling us about that.
I'm not so sure that he was "sucked into" Manhattan liberalism.
He liked the good life and having a lot to see and do, so he stayed in New York.
My guess is that both his "natural conservatism" and the liberalism of his surroundings cancelled out to leave him somewhere in the middle, as would be the case if any of us really made it in the literary world.
People who say they wouldn't be corrupted or changed are often people who never had the opportunity.
