The Seattle city council just voted 9-0 on an expansive tax that would seek to tax the city’s businesses that make over 20 million dollars a year in gross revenues. An earlier proposal that passed last week would have taxed businesses around $500 per employee per year. That measure — which passed 5-4 — Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan threatened to veto if it reached her desk.

To pay for the large homeless population in Seattle, the city council is going to tax corporations, causing them to lay off additional employees, which will increase the number of homeless.

One of the smartest Indian software engineers I’ve ever known recently quit where I work and left for Seattle, no job, nothing. She did it because “I may never get the chance to do it again.” Rent is insane out there and things are getting slowly worse. But whatever. Price you pay for being a libtard.
Just give the homeless a warehouse on the outskirts of town with free booze and of course marijuana. It’s legal. One gate manned to keep out the drug dealers.

BA HQ is in Chi not Seattle. MS is in Redmond not Seattle
(although there is a presence there). AMZN and SBUX are affected but the employees are for the most part tech staff for whom $275 per head per year is a rounding error compared to their 6 figure salaries and benefits. I really don’t see the established mega corps relocating because of this. The techies that live in Seattle are going to continue be a sought after resource.
I had a 1 room efficiency apt in Bellevue (across the lake) outside Seattle in 2007. A little less than 500 sq/ft. $1050/month. And that was 10 years ago.

The tax is not on Seattle based companies, but on any employees in Seattle of a company making $20 million or more per year. That means McDonald’s employees will be taxed.
What does anyone expect? marxists want the collectivity to own ALL the means of production, and hate it when someone dares to own a business. They can’t confiscate the businesses, just yet, so they tax the hell out of them.
People don't realize that this head tax is SEATTLE. NOT surrounding cities such as Bellevue, Redmond etc that have their own city counsels.
Also this is ONE of the reasons--besides space--that Microsoft built its campus in Redmond. Back then it was VERY rural area and didn't have all the tax and business unfriendly attitudes that Seattle has often swayed towards.

Microsoft has a large presence in Bellevue and Seattle. At least they did when I worked in Seattle and Bellevue. I understand the state was really ticked when they moved their licensing department out of state, taking away a HUGE amount of tax revenue from the state.
I don’t know how the city of Seattle handles it if you are a $20mm plus company but only have 30 employees in Seattle. Does that mean you pay the tax on those 30 people? I assume so.

Here is what gets me.
They are levying this tax to set up programs to help homeless.
My question is, what about all of the tax revenue Seattle currently collects from existing taxes? Why can’t they budget for homeless programs within their existing budget?
And I wonder if this special dedicated tax for homeless, will stay that way, or will this new additional tax revenue be diverted elsewhere. Will this money be “borrowed” by other government agencies to balance their budgets, pay pension benefits, pay legal settlements, or other things which come up?
I really question if this dedicated tax is going to always be spent only on homeless programs. And I question if the tax will be repealed, when they have determined, at some future date, that the homeless problem is under control.
