In this essay, I reflect on some of the ways racial privilege influenced my experience as a white physician in training. While white Americans often think of “racism” as a social construct primarily affecting people of color, “racism” is a system of both racial disadvantage as well as reciprocal racial advantage.
Medical professionals are increasingly aware of how social determinants of health lead to important health disparities, however white physicians seldom ask how their own racial privilege reinforces a white supremacist culture and what effects this may have on our patients’ health.
Drawing attention to the powerful legacy of racial discrimination in medical institutions, I call on other white physicians to name their privilege in order to dismantle the systems that propagate racism in our profession.
Although systems of racial oppression take generations to dismantle, we must begin with an awareness of the problem. As I reflect on that bullet-riddled body and the callousness with which my colleagues mocked the memory of his life, I think of the important work we have left to do.
White physicians have an opportunity to acknowledge the unearned racial privilege that benefited their careers and actively work to dismantle the systems that propagate racism in medicine. I challenge other white physicians to speak out against the racism we have all benefited from and to work towards racial justice in our medical system for our colleagues and our patients.

At my son’s graduation this past weekend, about 2/3 of the graduating class in his department, Biological Sciences, were women. Of the men graduating about half were caucasian. Males, white males specifically, are being pushed out of stem programs from what I can see in favor of women and minorities. It’s going to be a hard slog in the medical field. This guy is a gas bag lacking in wisdom.
And the real world result of not holding everyone to the same high standards? - third world medicine and racism.
For example:
Based on two highly negative experiences, one which almost cost my wife her life, I will not accept a black or brown doctor in an emergency situation. It deeply pains me to have to behave that way but my family comes first. Too many MD’s these days get their degrees overseas and too many are quotas. I know there are brilliant doctors of all races. I’m just not willing to play Russian roulette again.
I’m not Jewish but I seek out Jewish doctors. Yes I know there are bad apples there also - I’m just playing the odds.
So I am a racist. Yuck.

The only black physician I ever went to was the result of being in an HMO. He was a podiatrist who seemed terrified of the responsibility. I stick with my racist choices now.

The media won’t say a peep about that bridge. Here in NC they are starting programs in vocational schools promoting women in the trades. Eventually men will be pushed out of those classes and women will be given preference. I hate feminism and liberals squawking about toxic masculinity and white male privilege.
I’m guessing the “spouse” is a dude - another sick twink lecturing to the sane folks....
