Isaiah McCoy walked out of a Delaware prison a free man in January 2017, five years after being convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
A judge found him not guilty at a retrial, and McCoy soon began enjoying the limelight that came with his exoneration. He reveled in speaking engagements before lawyers associations and anti-death penalty groups.
People were loving my story, McCoy said.
But in less than a year, he went from death row in Delaware to giving speeches about wrongful convictions to back behind bars.
Now, hes in a detention center in Hawaii, where he is charged with seven counts of sex trafficking.
He told The Associated Press from the Honolulu Federal Detention Center hes again accused of a crime he didnt commit, and hell use his knowledge of the law learned during years of incarceration to represent himself at his upcoming trial.
Prosecutors arent impressed. They say McCoy became a pimp after moving to Hawaii and that he threatened and coerced young women into prostitution. They call his arguments for dropping the charges, including vindictive prosecution, conclusory and baseless.

“You wanna make some money, bitch!”
Some people mess up a second chance.
I believe every person deserves one but not every one learns from their mistakes and shows a desire to turn their life around.
Then they pay the price and excuse me if I’m not exactly choked up for them.
Worked on the fly he did.
The only difference between him and Eric Schneiderman is he wasn’t occupying high office.
I guess being an anti-death penalty crusader didn’t pay the bills.
Melvin “Mel” Reynolds comes to mind.
He just fell into being a pimp, huh?
If everything in his life was hitting on all cylinders, he didn’t need to be one.
Yeah, the cops made him do it. I’ve heard all the excuses.
How do you get entrapped into selling women for sex?
No one held a gun to his head and forced him to do it.
Some people are just like OJ.
Isaiah, we hardly knew ye.....
He learned to work the fly. Or rather he had his girls do it.
He gets louder and more animated reminiscing about his performance: Im thinking, I got this.
The jury found him guilty.
Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds is headed back to jail, but for a short enough time four months that he said hopes to be living in Africa by Christmas.
Im done with America. Im going to do this, and Im going home to Africa. Ive given up on America, Reynolds told reporters after U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman sentenced him to six months imprisonment for his failure to file income tax returns.
With credit for two months previously served after he was jailed in 2016 for violating bond conditions, Reynolds will only need to spend an additional four months in custody to complete his sentence.
Federal prosecutors had sought a sentence of up to 27 months in prison for Reynolds, as suggested under federal sentencing guidelines, largely based on his two prior convictions.
Reynolds will probably not choose Zimbabwe however, as hes already been arrested there also.
No, not everyone deserves a second chance. Sociopaths can be quite charming and persuasive, but their intent is evil. Some people should be locked up for life.
