Turnout is the issue. The Dems have been receiving greater turnouts across the board since 2016, even in their losses.

You can't compare the turnout in a presidential election with an off-year Senate special election. That said, look at the votes for Jones compared to Hillary--674K to 730K. Truly amazing under the circumstances. The Dems over-performed dramatically while the Reps under-performed.

The Reps will regain the seat in 2020, but the damage has been done. Moore was a bad choice regardless of the damage done to him by the MSM. The Reps shot themselves in the foot.

The media won that round with the accusers.

The Republican turnout in non-Presidential elections here are much higher than 2017.

Here is the election results in 2014 in Alabama, where Jeff Sessions was running UNOPPOSED!

UNOPOSSED, he had more than enough to beat Doug Jones numbers.
