A cocaine breathalyzer may soon help cops sniff out the drug within minutes.
The device could become a reality thanks to a new low-cost, chemical-sensing chip being developed at the University of Buffalo, the school announced Monday.
The chip could be integrated into a handheld device and used by authorities to detect drugs in breath, spit, urine or blood.

Can Maxine Waters be tested first? Please?
I remember the days of the cocaine pens - load them and give it a twist when one needed a hit - served as delivery system too ...
Does it go in their nose?
There’s money in selling high tech testing devices to police agencies across the country. Whether they are leasing red light cameras for 50% of the ticket revenue or selling (other) contraptions that “sense” drugs, firearms, stolen money. There was a case about 15-20 years ago where somebody’s cousin/nephew/son was selling a “device” to police departments that “allegedly” could detect all of those things (one device, you just change the card of what it is looking for). Plot right out of an old Bugs Bunny cartoon. And the conman’s relative worked in government (possibly in law enforcement) getting the contracts.
“Great demand” means “an untapped market”.
There are those who want to push the DWI BAC down to 0.05 and then 0.03 (in law enforcement, CDC, and private groups). It is 0.01 in Sweden. One suggested way to get compliance is to install breath detector ignition systems into EVERYONE’s cars regardless of prior charges or convictions. Think of all the revenue to the manufacturer for selling one with every car and think of the cost of monitoring the infractions remotely.
More illegal search and seizure along the lines of “implied consent?”
The dilated pupils, sweating profusely and talking at a mile a minute aren’t enough of a tell?
How about one for marijuana?
This should make LivePD viewing more fun on Friday and Saturday nights.
I didn’t realize cocaine was still a ‘thing’.
Haven't personally had a drug or alcohol for close to 30 years and really have no idea what's in/out these days.
