The US had no treaty obligation to jump into a world war. Truth be told I think the US should have stayed out of WWI. As for WWII, obviously Hitler should have been stopped much sooner but it seems churlish to blame the US when Britain and France repeatedly rolled over and let Hitler gain more strength before finally standing up to him and the Russians actively collaborated with him until he launched his attack upon the Soviet Union. So it seems wanting to avoid getting into a major war until it was unavoidable was a common trait.
At the start of the World War II in 1939, the Royal Navy was the largest in the world.
7 aircraft carriers with 5 more under construction
15 battleships and battlecruisers with 5 more under construction
66 cruisers with 23 more under construction
184 destroyers with 52 under construction
45 escort and patrol vessels with 9 under construction and one on order
60 submarines with 9 under construction
Today:
1 (mostly ready) aircraft carrier, with 1 under construction
6 destroyers
13 frigates, with 1 under construction
4 ballistic missile submarines, with 1 under construction
6 attack submarines, with 4 under constuction
The article also mentioned that USN destroyers and frigates may also form a portion of their surface screen as the RN is short in that area as well. First I heard of that!
No. Americas wanted no part of a European war until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. America did not declare war on Germany, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States. It was the only county ever to do so. Prior to America’s entry into WW2 we had been supplying England arms through the Lend Lease Program. Get your facts straight , eh?
That’s a bit harsh on the Invincible class carriers, where ship design and aircraft design (Sea Harrier) came together to make a near-perfect partnership. Certainly much more than a ‘glorified helicopter carrier’.
Argentina will invade the Falklands again... : )
