BREAKING: State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey wins Republican primary in U.S. Senate race in West Virginia. Convicted ex-coal CEO Don Blankenship loses.
Yes, we need to win that seat!
I don’t think he likes the Senate, he wants to be Gov.
Actually not such good news. There is no good news in WVA. Morrisey is a weak vacuous candidate. He will very likely lose against Manchin.
Morrisey is not well-liked in WVA. He won a plurality, the three candidates split the ticket and Morrisey squeaked in.
I watched him in the Youtube debate. I wish I could say he has the right stuff. He doesn’t.
Except that Morrissey is not popular and his conservatism is thin and contrived. He’s also a carpetbagger having lived in other states and tried and failed to get elected in them.
"Morrisey is a rock-solid, independent-minded conservative who would be a valuable addition to the right flank of the Republican caucus."
As a “carpetbagger,” how did Morrisey become the first Republican to be elected the first attorney general since 1933?
Oklahoma is the only state in the country where Trump took every county
989,000 registered Republicans
852,000 registered Democrats
Girls.....no offense
Blankenship was running spots of that sort on radio. During Rush Limbaugh, no less.
But here’s the rub with that sort of thinking: Morrisey has run and won in two statewide general elections.
Neither Jenkins nor Blankenship could make that claim.
As for the general election, here’s the bottom line up front. Both candidates will have baggage to explain to voters.
A bunch of people in dub-vee have really soured on Manchin. Many of those people think he’s out for himself, and less for them. Taking money from Michael Bloomberg, while a prudent move for Manchin, did not endear him to many.
Short answer: lots of hard work. Lots of traveling around WV, rallying GOP faithful.
I think it’s fair to say the WV GOP has a lot of Morrisey fingerprints on it.
He ran for US Congress in two other states and lost.
He moved to WVA and ran against a weak opponent for state AG. He won, now he wants to be a US Senator.
I watched him in the debates and I wished I hadn’t because I would be joining the rest of the uninformed posters on this thread, touting good news, cheerleading. But what I saw was a fellow with little substance except talking points.
He just doesn’t have the right stuff. I ***wish*** it was different. What I wish for and what I observe as reality are not aligned.
Manchin is much more smooth and devious. Manchin has won 5 elections. Morrisey doesn’t match up with Manchin. I wish it was different, it’s not.
Morrisey is weak but he got lucky by having a weaker opponent. So he won a state race. Now he wants to be a US Senator.
Manchin is not weak.
Morrisey is not popular. He won this primary with a plurality on a 3-way split ticket. That’s not a recipe for success for the general.
When I watched him, I was ***wishing*** to see a strong serious candidate with gravitas. What I saw, in reality, was a guy who couldn’t put a thought together outside of his talking points and buzz phrases; totally programmed, totally predictable. I was disappointed.
I ***hope*** he wins. But the odds are not in his favor, unfortunately.
Sorry to bring this viewpoint to the thread. It is not a view I wished to have.
Basically, there is no good news in WVA.
Wait, you mean the national review that is anti Trump? That was my fear.
Conservatives dodged quite a few bullets last night, including the WV race, which will be fiercely contested in the fall.
Your analysis simply means that Manchin was never in real danger from the start then.
GOP voters slammed the door on the rest of him, and he lost his shoe. Next the LSM will be claiming that he would have lost anyway, and it had nothing to do with Trump’s endorsement of the other two candidates.
You realize what Manchin would do with Blankenship as an opponent? He went to jail for killing miners, physically abused his maid and contaminated his neighbors groundwater and didn’t tell them. He is a truly reprehensible individual. The Dems would crucify him.
