I wonder about that sometimes. Given the way the party conventions played out, by the time McCain officially received the nomination he already knew that he'd be facing Obama. His role, as set forth by the Uniparty, was to lose after a campaign that was mostly contrived to keep the people thinking that they had a role to play in such elections.
After seeing McCain show his real teeth and claws two years later in his Senate reelection campaign, it was pretty obvious that he'd phoned-in the 2008 effort. Ever since then, I've believed that Sarah was selected because she was someone whose political future the GOP didn't mind destroying. Her popularity sure threw a scare into the Establishment, though - hence the lengthy post-election beat-down that they aimed at her.
