Van Lathan just became a champion of Kanye West critics and an example, for some, of the need for racial diversity in the workplace.
Lathan is the African-American TMZ employee who offered a powerful rebuttal after West, during an interview Tuesday on "TMZ Live," said American slavery was a "choice."

by the way, I hear that “400 years of slavery” line being thrown around the fake news media.
According to history.com, the first slaves came in 1619:
“Slavery in America started in 1619, when a Dutch ship brought 20 African slaves ashore in the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia...”

Since slavery in America ended in 1865, that would be 246 years of slavery.
Am I wrong?
Van Lathan chooses to be a slave.
Obviously I do not believe that slavery was a “choice”. But here’s the elephant in the room. Those sold into slavery were already enslaved. Had they remained on the African continent their condition would not have changed, they would have remained enslaved. So in the end, It really doesn’t matter where they were, they were originally enslaved by their own people.
I would be skeptical of jumping on the Kanye West bandwagon.....he can say some really stupid things....just saying!!!!
I agree. I think hes trying to stir things up to get his name back in the headlines again. That said, he making the left go nuts, so let him keep on talking!
Well, he’s a Christian and he’s saying things that make sense. And he is not afraid. I think to be in Hollywood and to do what he is doing takes a lot of courage.
In a subtle way, I think that is Kanye’s point. Any African American who talks about “400 years of slavery”, well the last 152 were by choice.
It seems to be lost on folks, that had those enslaved Africans not been brought here, they’d still be enslaved. It wasn’t white Europeans and Americans running around Africa capturing free Blacks and shipping them here.
And that leads me to my next point. Those Blacks complaining about life here, really need to take a look at their standard of living compared to their African counterparts. Even during the Jim Crow days, African Americans enjoyed a massive difference in the standard of living compared to those who remained on the continent.
OMG. Rush was JUST TALKING about what you and I have said! I am betting he or someone on his staff trolls FR!!
Lying right out of the chute. He didn’t say American slavery was a choice. Listen to the actual words.
No need to even read further. Either this source is a liar or is just passing on a lie as ordered.
The interesting thing about Kanye is how he’s illustrating for everyone exactly how this groupthink is enforced on black Americans. All he did was wear a hat, backed by tweets where he specifically stated that he didn’t agree with everything anyone does, but that doesn’t prevent him from treating everyone with love and respect. For this, he gets unbelievable vitriol.
When I heard this from Kanye, I immediately thought of Frederick Douglass. He’d agree.
