Why did working-class voters choose a selfish, thin-skinned, petulant, lying, narcissistic, boastful megalomaniac for president?
With the 2018 midterms around the corner, and prospective Democratic candidates already eyeing the 2020 presidential race, the answer is important because it will influence how Democrats campaign.
One explanation focuses on economic hardship. The working class fell for Mr. Trump's economic populism.
A competing explanation -- which got a boost this week from a study published by the National Academy of Sciences -- dismisses economic hardship and blames it on whites' fear of losing status to blacks and immigrants. They were attracted to Mr. Trump's form of identity politics: bigotry.
If Democrats accept the bigotry explanation, they may be more inclined to foster their own identity politics of women, blacks and Latinos. And they'll be less inclined to come up with credible solutions to widening inequality and growing economic insecurity.
Yet the truth isn't found in one explanation or the other. It's in the interplay between the two.
Mr. Trump isn't the cause of what's happened to America. He's the consequence -- the product of years of stagnant wages and big money's corruption of our democracy.
If they really want to stop Mr. Trump and prevent future Trumps, Democrats will need to address these causes of Mr. Trump's rise.

“selfish, thin-skinned, petulant, lying, narcissistic, boastful megalomaniac” = Hillary Clinton
Robert Reich himself is a selfish, thin-skinned, petulant, lying, narcissistic, boastful megalomaniac, is he not?
His economic reports and analyses are riddled with bad assumptions and questionable data. He will support with lines and graphs any fanciful belief that you have.
Robert Bernard Reich is the darling of mean small minded Democrats and Progressives.
Even when they try not to, they still use the racism card to explain their defeats.
The Democrats take money from Planned Parenthood, who chop up fetuses and sell the parts for money to buy fancy cars - this is out of their own mouths. That is really all you need to know, isn’t it. Despicable! They are monsters.
Meanwhile, the Democrat Machine in Chicago, sat back and watched the black neighborhoods die in weekly gun battles, while they washed their hands like Pontius Pilate, saying “if we only had gun control!”
They are liars and hypocrites.
Mr. Trump isn’t the cause of what’s happened to America. He’s the consequence
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FOUR Presidents in a row, two of both parties REFUSING to enforce the laws and borders are what led to Trump.
Thank God he stepped up and saved us from another Bush/Clinton non-choice.
The first sentence describes Obama AND Hillary to a tee.
“The working class fell for Mr. Trump’s economic populism.”
Billionaire businessman versus former presidents and presidential candidates who never worked a real day in their lives, and the results are already evident. America first versus closet Communists and open Socialists.
What economic number can liberals point to that were better under Obama?
What does the GDP say? What does the employment rate say? Are investors putting more or less in the market now than before?
The voters “fell” for reality as opposed to the empty promises and media deception that has been used to manipulate and control the populace.
Trump is working. MAGA.
Maybe people just got tired of being called racists.
Half-assed? I always thought he was a complete ass.
“Barack Obama bailed out the banks but not homeowners. Obamacare, while important to the poor, didn’t alleviate the financial stresses on the working class, particularly in states that refused to expand Medicaid.”
This is the only true statement from the article.
Yet this is what he wants to offer:
“A few Democrats are getting the message, pushing ambitious ideas like government-guaranteed full employment, single-payer health care, industry-wide collective bargaining and a universal basic income.”
Who pays for that? And this was Obama’s economic adviser?
They just don’t get it. Keep on losing Democrats.
Thats a lot of technobabble to respew the mantra - they wuz raciss!
And how do we stop that going forward? Why we use thought control.
I think the much more important question for our survival as a Constitutional Republic is, how can the American people stop Robert B. Reich (and prevent future Robert B. Reichs)?
Reich has always been a backwards Commie moron. We need more Trumps, not fewer.
Trump came along with better ideas to solve America's debt and Obama's foreign policy mess.
Trump has done a steller job so far. North Korea has come to the treaty table and promised peace for the first time in 50 years. Iran has been exposed as lying to the world and exposed as a hostile power preparing to be a nuclear aggressor.
Trump's successes just go on and on. The Special Counsel is now obviously a wolf in sheep's clothing - a last ditch to chance to stop Trump from succeeding where democrats have failed for 70 years.
Go Trump Go. Fire the evil progressive democrats and their leader.
Reich is a lying little troll.
“...prevent future Trumps...”
After WWII we wanted to prevent future Reichs.
Just abandon the 2-party system and put swastikas on everything, you a%$hole!!!
Is this midget still casting his shadow over America?
That was the very reason why we didn't vote for Hillary Clinton. And many in the Democratic Party knew it but were too scared by the Clintons' blackmail tactics--including the use of "Arkancide"--to suppress anyone in the Democratic Party opposing her.
