Tolerant San Francisco fed up with dirty, smelly streets

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) —

Though known for its compassion to the needy, San Francisco may have hit peak saturation with tent camps, stinky urine and trash littering the streets, and the new interim mayor has vowed to do something about it.

In the last few weeks, Mayor Mark Farrell has promised $750,000 to hire more people just to pick up discarded needles and $13 million over the next two years for more heavy duty steam cleaners and pit stop toilets. He also had workers dismantle sprawling homeless tent camps in the city's Mission District.

The city famed for its picture-perfect views of the San Francisco Bay has long tolerated overflowing trash bins and homeless people camped out on sidewalks. Commuters routinely walk past people slumped over in transit stations, sometimes shooting up in public.

But Farrell and others say the squalor has gotten out of control, and that everyone should feel safe using city sidewalks. It is not humane to let the mentally ill or houseless fester outdoors, he said.

"The trash, our homeless, the needles, the drug abuse on our streets, I've seen it all in our city and it's gotten to the point where we need to really change course," Farrell said in an interview. "We've gone away from just being compassionate to enabling street behavior and that, in my opinion, is a shift that's unacceptable."

It's not just the mayor who's fed up. Cleaning up the city and getting people off the streets have become key issues in the upcoming mayoral race. Many of the problems are in the city's downtown shopping and South of Market corridors, but elected officials say complaints have rolled in from across the city of 850,000 residents.

Yes, that’s the ticket. Pawn your problems off on someone else. Real brain surgery there.

Everyone is hoping there is no remake of the TV show of the 1970s, “The Streets of San Francisco.”

They like to go downtown to eat, and for Opera and Symphony.

ONLY then, they might be momentarily affected...depending on their level of exposure and proximity to it. Some commoners (collateral damage) might be affected (up close and personal) on a more regular basis.

DEFUND totalitarian/3rd-world hellholes, foreign and domestic.

...then you’re a liberal.

You can thank me later for finishing your sentence.
I wear a clothespin on my nose living in an 80% Democrat city. If you call that living.

It’s easy to TOLERATE the dregs of society as long as they’re in SOMEONE ELSE’S faces. Quite a bit different when they become SO WIDESPREAD that you, yourself, have to step over them to go to work, or even just to go to the head shop.

If they were ‘fed up’ with their idiotic and self-made situation, they’d change it.

Don’t hold your breath. San Francisco is San Francisco.

It’d be tough for a modern day Stone or Keller to chase down suspects in hazmat suits and thick rubber boots.

No big, powerful LTDs. Some kind of electric car.

Absolutely no terrifying revolvers. Water pistols and tazers for the really big villians.

Streets is still one of my favorite shows. QM made a masterpiece on seasons 1-4. Season 5, well.......

This once beautiful snd amazing city shoul be the national model and example of how progressivism is like Satan...it comes to kill, steal and destroy.

San Franciscans gave always been liberal, quirky and eccentric so their voting has always been bent to the Democrats. But as the Democrat party has advanced from liberals in mold of Hubert Humphery, Henry Jackson and Fritz Mondale to the radical progressivism/socialism of 0bama, they are a destuctive party. The old time Femocrats at least were for the rule of law, opposed to illegal immigration and still for America. The 0bama Democrat party is for blatant lawlessness. Anything that is Biblically evil is wonderful to them.

San Franciscans dont like what has happened to their city. But until they are willing to throw out the progressive/socialists, their city will continue in its decay.

When I lived in Europe and people asked me where I was from, I’d say Los Angeles, and they’d immediately say they didn’t like it much, but SaFraCeesCO, they all LOVED that city BEAUCOUP! What is going to happen when tourists all realize that going to SF is less sanitary than visiting Calcutta?

That dog is LUCKY. On the boulevard here, a neighbor took some photos of a bush under which were 40 or so OPEN needles. Dogs always stick their noses into such places to smell some other dog’s “calling card.” Scary. For inquisitive dogs or little curious preschoolers.

San Francisco spends almost five times as much per person as does Phoenix!

All that free sh*t isn’t cheap!
