Most of the time, Israel is an ally. We must never forget, though, that nations don't have friends. They have interests. When two (or more) nations' interests are roughly congruent, they may cooperate to mutual benefit. But nations will (almost) always act to protect their OWN interests; the interests of "allies" or "partners" come in distant second at best.
