Sacramento investigators tracked down East Area Rapist suspect Joseph James DeAngelo using genealogical websites that contained genetic information from a relative, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday.

The effort was part of a painstaking process that began by using DNA from one of the crime scenes from years ago and comparing it to genetic profiles available online through various websites that cater to individuals wanting to know more about their family backgrounds by accepting DNA samples, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi.

This whole DNA thing is going to make a lot of criminals have sleepless nights, as they should.

Authoritative government overreach is here... I know, I know, don’t commit a crime and I won’t have to worry that my brothers dna is on file somewhere

Glad they got the perp, but the data harvesting techniques are scary.

Is it the 14th Amendment that restricts data collection on the citizens to some 10-year interval.... it’s a brave new world.

I wonder what percentage of our DNA is in a govt database now. 80 or 90 %?

So we all trust the FBI when they say they found somebody’s DNA at a crime scene?

It seems like he may have stopped committing these crimes once he knew about dna.

"wanting to know more about their family background"

There may be some things that are best left buried.

Oh, are you related to Ted Bundy or maybe the BTK killer?

Gacie a kin of yours?

Which means the people who sent their DNA in just shared it with the world. Stupid.

Has he denied or confirmed his identity yet?
Has he denied or confirmed that he committed these crimes yet? If this is the right man, he is extremely clever, so they need to have lots of corroborating evidence.

I believe I read that the culprit used to sneak into people’s home prior to raping or murdering the victim. He would find the victim’s available guns and empty those guns of any bullets or shells. I’d never heard of such diabolic behavior before.

If he is the one. I would be very interested to know how he stopped his compulsion to do these crimes, assuming that he ever did fully stop.

I don’t like this, at all. The ways in which this could be abused are legion.

The BTK killer stopped while the was a code inspector. He got the same rush forcing someone to move an existing sidewalk three inches as he did from binding torturing and killing women.

A psychiatrist may have prescribed something like Klonopin, Haldol or Zoloft. But he would have to open up and tell at least a part of his story in order to get the prescription.
Some schizophrenics don’t trust any med. professional and may chose to self medicate with alcohol, cocaine or marijuana.
But even to obtain those, you need to make contacts and allow yourself to be known in some sense.

And this is exactly why my DNA will never be sent to any of these sites. I’ve done nothing wrong - but what stops them from selling my DNA to insurance companies to deny me coverage because of genetic propensity for illness?

So it’s best if a serial killer is the only child of two people who also happen to be only children...
