No I’m one of those people who take scripture at its word. Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel condemn Israel for child sacrifice and note it is one the sins for which God is visiting his wrath in the form of the Babylonians. This condemnation extends to “The children of Israel....their kings, their officials, their priests and the prophets, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Judah.” (Jer 32.30-35) Sounds pretty all-encompassing. This is exactly what God said he would do (in Deuteronomy) if they did engage in child sacrifice. It’s all right there in the Tanakh.

You stopped too early:

37 Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, whither I have driven them in Mine anger, and in My fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them back unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely

38 and they shall be My people, and I will be their God;

39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me for ever; for the good of them, and of their children after them;

40 and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me.

41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in truth with My whole heart and with My whole soul. {S}

42 For thus saith the LORD: Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.
