How can a ruthless police state run by a megalomaniac merge with a democracy? Where would the dear leader of the Norks fit in? When Germany reunified it basically was under the aegis of West Germany.

Just as North Vietnam absorbed South Vietnam or China absorbed Hong Kong, it is not impossible. Slowly converting S. Korea along the line of Venezuela, Iran, or Chicom style dictatorship. It can start with vastly increasing the state sector of economy. Increasing government workers, defacto control of many large corporations, and expanded social welfare, and complete takeover of media and judiciary. Exploiting class envy, giving nice handout (in the short-term,) and media propaganda could go a long way. While the specter of N. Korean nuclear blackmail hanging overhead.

In time, they can nurture a sizable die-hard supporters, and make the rest feel that it is too late and resistance is futile.

The only difference I notice in the Google Earth database between Pyongyang and Seoul is that Seoul doesn't have a labeled "roads" layer.

However, the imagery is so sharp that you can ID automobile types -- so, anyone with Google Earth (and tons of slave labor) could create their own roads layer.

Of course, Pyongyang has lots of beautiful multilane roads -- with little or no vehicles on them. I just checked over three miles of pristine eight-lane roadway in downtown Pyongyang that had a total of one (1) vehicle on it!

2018 Inter-Korean summit] NK’s inclusion of military, diplomatic brass in delegation hints at long-term plans:

The inclusion of top military and diplomatic officials in North Korea’s delegation to the inter-Korean summit could be an indication of Pyongyang’s long-term plans, a top South Korean official said Thursday.

In addition to party officials, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be accompanied by chief of the General Staff of the Korean People‘s Army Ri Myong-su and Minister of People’s Armed Forces Pak Yong-sik. The delegation will also include Foreign Minsiter Ri Yong-ho and Ri Son-gwon, chairman of North Korea’s Committee for Peaceful Reunification.

“(Kim Jong-un’s entourage) includes core military and diplomatic officials, which was not expected,” said Im Jong-seok, President Moon Jae-in’s chief of staff and head of the summit preparation committee.

“(Seoul) takes the move as a sign that the North is not considering just the inter-Korean summit, but looking ahead to the US-North Korea talks, and international cooperation that will follow.”

Im added that North Korea’s military officials have been included in the delegation in light of the fact that denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula are central to the inter-Korean summit.

As for Kim Jong-un’s wife Ri Sol-ju, Im said Seoul hopes for her presence but that related negotiations have not proved conclusive.

What is the next step, unification?

They will try to proceed according to the blueprint NK had drawn up long time ago. Kim and Moon will probably make some bombshell announcements as if complete peace had broke out. Such as dismantling DMZ: no fence, no mine, and no guard posts. We will see how far they will push, and how much China will restrain NK which wants to proceed at breakneck speed. They are angling for wall-to-wall media coverage for days.

Then SK will try to eagerly push economic joint ventures and the lifting of economic sanctions on NK. The immediate goal of NK is to put U.S. on the defensive in PR war.

Yes, very likely. Have you seen any opinion polls in SK about this?

A survey conducted by the state-run Korea Institute for National Unification found that more than seven out of 10 South Koreans in their 20s now oppose reunification.

They hate "crappy" N. Koreans and Chinese. Women in 30's make up the most fanatic supporters at the moment. They form a large group of Internet trolls. Explanations vary about why they do it. Some argue that this age group has the tendency for crazy celebrity worship, and the left turned Moon into such a celebrity through their image making. Then there are those in late 40's and 50's, the fat cat privileged left such as big labor unions.

The factory town of Ulsan is a home to Hyundai car factories and shipyards. Its average income is the highest in S. Korea. But it is also the bastion of left-wing parties.

According to a number of different domestic surveys, some 60 to 80 percent of South Koreans have a positive view of the April 27 talks. However, one-on-one interviews with locals reveal significant differences between age brackets.

According to the Seoul National University Institute for Peace and Unification Studies (IPUS)’s annual Unification Perception Survey, 11.8 percent of respondents in 2007 said they preferred the North-South status quo stay in place. That had risen to 24.7 percent in the 2017 version, which also showed that 30 percent or more of people in their 30s and under favored keeping the current divide.

When asked if there needed to be regular summit talks toward reunifying the Korean Peninsula, 31.8 percent of respondents in 2017 said, “I don’t think so,” compared to 25.3 percent in 2007.

In 2007, then South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun’s public approval ratings shot up when he met with the North’s Kim Jong Il. It remains to be seen how the South Korean public will react to the 2018 version.

Except for the nuclear part you could be talking accurately about California.

Not impossible, like West Germany absorbed East Germany.
When you tell something, tell the whole story, not just the half-one that suits you.

I was quoting the wise and venerable TigerLikesRooster to point out the same dynamic is happening in California. In this case it is Mexico that is seeking to absorb Southern California.

.
Mexico is on the verge of re-acquiring the entire Guadalupe Hidalgo parcel (Basically all the western states) due to blatant treaty violations by our DOJ and BLM.

Uranium One is at the foundation of most of the recent violations.

Our government is totally rogue.
