Democrats mull audacious play to block Pompeo

Democrats are mulling an audacious plan to bottle up President Trump's nominee to head the State Department in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee - even though Mike Pompeo likely has enough votes to win confirmation on the Senate floor.

The plan under consideration would involve Democrats on the panel refusing to vote to discharge Pompeo from the committee with even an unfavorable recommendation.

This would force Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to offer a motion to bring Pompeo's nomination to the Senate floor. Democratic senators and aides say that motion would be subject to a filibuster, allowing Democrats to block Pompeo.

They want THEIR staff at State to be able to keep running things without interference from a Trump appointee.

If they won’t approve him as SecState, he is still head of CIA. Trump can just use him as defacto SecState. As he racks up successes it will at some point become too much of an embarrassment to the Dems and they’ll have to concede reality.

Until them, ignore them. Let Pompeo continue to act as head of State. If anyone doesn’t obey him, Trump can fire them.

The Dems can't do this by themselves. Being a committee, the chairman can change the rules, as was done with Blue Slips on the Judiciary Committee. So who chairs the Foreign Relations Committee? None other than Bob Corker.

I had read similar... that he was not in Gulf War but had indicated he had served in Gulf.

And isn’t goofy Rand Paul saying he won’t vote on Pompeo even after Trump spoke with Rand? I haven’t read why Rand is against Pompeo... other than being a drama, attention seeking queen.

Let’s see - Pompeo has a secret meeting with the nutjob leader of North Korea and three weeks later that leader announces that he’s abandoning testing on more missiles and shutting down a main development center, and is willing to discuss abandoning his intentions for a nuclear NoKo - only a Democrat would be stupid enough to try deny the job of Secretary of State to a man with that bit of credentialing.....
