Reading the memos, it is apparent that Comey, such a trickster himself, failed to realize that Trump’s pattern of jumping around and revisiting topics is intentional. Doing so throws people off balance and off their “plan”, potentially allowing truth to ooze out. At one point, Comey mentions presenting something in accordance with his “plan”. Nothing horrific in having a plan of what you want to get across; my point is that Trump controls a conversation and confounds other peoples’ agendas without them even knowing it. Comey assumes Trump is simple-minded and scatter-brained. I see it as evidence that Trump never trusted Comey or McCabe one iota.
At first I felt as if these memos were written as fodder for a future book, as much as an insurance policy. But there is a major self-consciousness about how they will come across to readers (i.e., they are not an aide-memoir for himself). He was plotting to use these from the first moment.
