The EU wants NATO gone. This kind of trouble on the soil of member states is a means to an end, in order to seize more power and consolidate all the national militaries (which is going on under the radar right now; also, Germany has a
new NATO headquarters that is utterly independent of the traditional structure). Clinton was the first US president to let the lid on this Pandora’s box pop open just a little, by using NATO in the 1990s for purposes that were never in its remit (Bosnia). Letting them become independent means we have a new enemy to deal with.
