The counties surrounding D.C. are among the most left-wing democrat in the entire nation.
You can draw a circle around DC....including Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington, and going into the three key Maryland counties....with roughly 70-percent of folks voting Democrat. I lived there for three years and was just surprised at the trend.
The odd thing is that the rest of Virginia (about 70-percent of it) votes mostly 60-percent GOP. Same is true for western end of Maryland.
My brother has some theory that urbanization since the 1970s is part of this trend, and why it’s nearly impossible for a Democrat to win in the southern states anymore.
