The Marine who became immortalized by playing a brutal drill sergeant in Stanley Kubricks Full Metal Jacket has died.
It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (The Gunny) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia, his manager Bill Rogers said in a statement posted to Mr. Ermeys official Twitter account.

Man that sucks, he might have just missed seeing the Swamp get drained. Sad!
“He isn’t really gone at all
He’s merely been recalled
“He’s taken up the watch once more
Chosen to stand at Heaven’s door
“For it is Marines you must recall,
That before Heaven’s Gates stand tall
“One he was branded with U.S.M.C.,
Its Life and for ever a Marine he will be
“Off the join the guard he’s went,
I’m sure that’s where he was sent.
“Before those doors he now awaits,
To greet us when we come to those gates.
The scene where he made DeNardo(?- i can’t remember his name right now) laugh right before fulfilling his last request i’ll always remember.
I can’t disagree that was one helluva movie. Semper Fi gunny, we’ll always remember you.

I would guess he actually voted against McCain.
R.I.P., deepest respects.
If youve ever been to basic training in the military during the 60s and 70s. You remember your DI. The gunny standing in front of new recruits in Full Metal Jacket was amazing. His performance in Fire Base Gloria was great. A truest great patriot who went in harms way. RIP SARGE. Youll be missed.

When I told my wife and friends that FMJ was the most accurate depiction of Parris Island Id ever seen, they refused to believe me. R. Lee Ermey seemed a little old to be a Senior Drill Instructor but he carried it off so well that it was a minor distraction. Loved Mail Call...
His commercial as a sympathetic doctor was so off the charts it scared me. Then he threw the box of Kleenex. Thats the guy in the kakis that I knew. A real patriot cant beat that.
He described himself politically as an independent and said he voted for then-Sen. Barack Obama in 2008, but his career largely ended in the early-10s after he was critical of him at a Toys for Tots event in 2010.
"We should all rise up, and we should stop this administration from what theyre doing because theyre destroying this country. Theyre driving us into bankruptcy so that they can impose socialism on us, and thats exactly what theyre doing, and Im sick and damn tired of it and I know you are too," he said at the event for the Marine Corps Reserves charity.
He apologized later for his "misguided and emotionally biased" comments but he lost some commercial sponsors and later told Fox News he was largely blackballed in Hollywood subsequently.
"Do you realize I have not done a movie in five to six years? Why? Because I was totally blackballed by the liberals in Hollywood," he said in 2016. "Thats why I live up in the desert on a dirt road - I dont have to put up with their crap."
Maybe the last Hollywood Patriot.

You’re forgetting Jon Voight, Clint Eastwood, James Woods and many others.
I also am sad that Gunny Ermey is gone.
Dad, who fought in the Guadalcanal/Bougainville Campaign in the Marines absolutely HATED listening to R. Lee Ermey not because his drill instructor act was bad but because it was RIGHT ONE THE MONEY.
It gave him 1942 Parris Island chills to hear him.
RIP Gunney
When I was 18 a boyfriend took me to see FMJ on a date. I enjoyed the movie but did not marry the guy. RIP R.Lee.
Just an FYI; Ronald Lee Ermey (March 24, 1944 April 15, 2018) was a former United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant (19611972) and was made a post career honorary Gunnery Sergeant; during his tenure in the U.S. Marine Corps he served as a drill instructor and Marine Wing Support Group 17 Marine.

Yes the Grim Reaper using pneumonia and its complications can take down anyone, no matter their overall physical condition. I’m 70.
It’s a scary story for those of us who are 70 and north thereof. If I took a random sample of 20 year old male college students, I bet Ermey could have out performed at least half of them in physical fitness tests; nevertheless he dropped before I did, and I’m older. Disturbing.
