Blasts were reported in Damascus, Syria, just minutes after President Trump announced that he would be launching an attack in retaliation for last week's chemical attack by Bashar al-Assad on his own citizens.
Unverified videos appear to show the attack as it happened, with Tomahawk missiles lighting up the sky over the Syrian capital.
President Trump said in a speech from the White House that he "ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. A combined operation with the armed forces of France and the United Kingdom is now underway."
The U.S. is conducting precision air strikes with B1 bombers, and at least two structures have been hit, according to reports, including a scientific research facility that may have been a site where chemical weapons are produced.
The AP reported: "Syrias capital has been rocked by loud explosions that lit up the sky with heavy smoke as U.S. President Donald Trump announced airstrikes in retaliation for the countrys alleged use of chemical weapons."
AP reporters in Damascus saw smoke rising from the east side of Damascus. "Syrian state TV says the attack has begun on the capital, though it wasnt immediately clear what was targeted," the AP wrote.
Reuters is reporting that, according to a witness, several explosions have been heard in Damascus, with smoke rising on the east side of the city.
Syrian state TV claims that Syrian forces launched a counterattack and that 13 Tomahawk missiles were shot down by Syrian forces, although that information has not been verified.

The Twitter universe does not have the information that Trump and Mattis have.
That is why we don’t use Twitter to conduct foreign policy.
Trump is not a simpleton.
Hitting chemical storage facilities? We know where they’re stored? Won’t that release a chemical plume?
I can see both sides. Sending a message to iran, etc.
I’m not sure the cost-benefit analysis of doing something like this pencils out...The worst case scenarios are certainly worth a pause—war with russia, etc.
Ingraham is being a sanctimonious twat.
The colonel got his disingenuous ass handed to him.
Despite the popular assumption, Twitter is not the voice of the people some believe it to be.
I think people are just SICK TO DEATH of kicking over hornets nests in the middle east.
Of course I’ll defer to President Trump’s judgement here.
Laura is off the rails. Sadly I’m switching to CNN for coverage of this event. Kudos to Sebastian Gorka though.
“Ingraham is being a sanctimonious twat.”
She does that a little too often for me. That is the part I do not like about her show.
The difference between “candidate” and POTUS is reality. What the candidate knows or thinks, vs the realities provided to those who actually hold the office is like night and day.
Oh gee, just might.
TV deprived, here :(
What is Laura saying??
We have no good reason to be involved in Syria. None. Syria posed no threat to us, and they treated Christians far better than most other Muslim countries.
Russia is not going to war with the U.S. over us hitting three targets. This attack was more about sending a message to Iran, and more importantly, North Korea - “don’t fk with us, Trump is not Obama.”
She’s saying basically, hey there are atrocities going on in South Sudan, in Nigeria, in China, why are we going off on Assad. This isn’t what Trump was elected on. She’s missing the point. Got sarcastic with Sebastian Gorka when he mentioned the founding fathers. He set her straight.
Agree on both.
Still, I can’t help but miss rational discussion.
Thank you God!! I thought i waz the last guy in . invasion of the body snatcers. I want to thank you.
Masterful timing and execution.
When is Trump going to announce attacks on ‘Monster’ Assad?
