I think Cohen paid Stormy to hush up an affair with someone else, not Trump.
Trump says he didn’t know anything about it. And apparently Trump didn’t sign anything.
I think Stormy realized Cohen was Trump’s lawyer and that she had gotten a check from Cohen. And realized that she could work with the democrats and the democrats would pay her to pretend there is a Trump story there.
Cohen can’t say anything because of client attorney privilege to whoever the check really was for.
And the Democrats have been able to used Stormy’s fake story, now to go after Cohen and see what dirt they can get.
You may be onto something. President Trump always stated he knew nothing about the money or where Cohen got the money. What you stated makes sense knowing how low & dirty Hillary & Obama plus their minions play.
