reports that a vehicle southbound on U.S. 101 went off the highway and tumbled into the Eel River. The road wasn't closed, so I wonder what caused them to go off the road? Poor visibility? Slippery surface? Distracting/noisy kids?

Distracting/noisy kids? That was my guess.
Perhaps the nine year old goes all "are we there yet," and the father picks the wrong time to be like "don't make me come back there..." on a windy cliff road.

Having driven that section of YS 101, I would guess they were going too fast for such a curvy road. Lots of turns.
