An armada of 12 warships — the largest US strike force since the 2003 Iraq war – is steaming toward the Middle East as President Trump mulls an attack on Syria in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack on civilians, according to a report.
The aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman set sail from Norfolk, Va., on Wednesday with five escort warships and they were expected to join four destroyers and two nuclear-powered subs believed to already be in or near the Mediterranean, the Times of London reported.
Trump on Wednesday appeared to telegraph an attack on Syria by tweeting that missiles “will be coming” in response to the attack on the town of Douma on April 7.

Nuclear wessels, carriers and subs, still run on steam. So I guess a portion of the ships and boats are steaming their way still.
We often use a show of force as a motivator for other objectives. I think we are still trying to make sure we know who the targets of any retaliation should be.
Where are they getting these chemical weapons?

But only a neocon believes we can fight Russian flagged forces, and that Russia will accept a conventional defeat and leave it at that.

Besides tomahawks and nukes (which they no longer carry) TF38 was far more deadly than this effort.

Well, it's not as if we're going to start torpedoing Russian frigates. If there is a naval conflict with Russia, they'll fire the first shots.

A couple of our nuclear attacks subs could take out every carrier in 1945's TF 38 with ease, leaving the rest of the ships to be mopped up by the Truman and her escorts.
The 2018 task force probably wouldn't take a single casualty.
Israel can protect themselves. They are powerful enough.
