On Wednesday, a day of growing peril in a part of the world where Russian and American forces sometimes confront each other, the president who campaigned on never telegraphing his intensions to adversaries decided to taunt Russia with the threat of a missile attack. Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria, President Trump tweeted Wednesday morning as an anxious world watched to see if the Syrian crisis will escalate out of control. Get ready, Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and smart.
President Trumps tweets fly in the face of the norms that even during the Cold War kept the two great nuclear powers from needlessly provoking each other. They risk further inflaming a conflict that has already drawn in regional and world powers in a dizzying nest of alignments. With the common enemy the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on the brink of defeat, those opposing forces are increasingly coming into conflict as they jockey for position and territorial control inside Syria.
Just this year, U.S. forces in Syria have battled Russian mercenaries who attacked their base, reportedly at the direction of the Kremlin, and killed more than 100 of them. In northern Syria, U.S. troops and their Kurdish allies remain engaged in a tense face-off with the military forces of Turkey, a NATO ally. This week, Israeli warplanes attacked a military base in Syria, where Iran coordinates its militias, killing four Iranian military advisers.

They conflate a silly tweet (one which I wish had not been sent), with an incoherent policy.
When in fact, they don’t like Trump’s policy of withdraw and ceding Syria to Assad.
Kind of like his incoherent twitter policy in NK that has them talking about denuclearization of the peninsula?
“Kind of like his incoherent twitter policy in NK that has them talking about denuclearization of the peninsula?”
No, not even close.
That was brilliant application and assertion of US policy.
That was Regan being caught on a hot mike, not an announced POTUS position.
I guess the difference is that the Soviets actually WERE A THREAT to us and our interests (such as Western Europe and Japan). I’m still trying to figure out why having a relative handful of Putin’s military in Syria is a threat to us...and such a threat that it’s worth trading cities over.
But perhaps some of the Hillary/Obama/McCain supporting Neocons will let us know.
Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall.
Not a hot mike, he was joking with the technicians.
It was later leaked.
“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall. “
That was a sound political admonition when the cold war was already essentially won.
It’s all about Israel, a short distance away, and Iran and our renewed “friend” SA.
Complicated business...
The fact that we are even considering going to war in Syria on behalf of Al Qaeda & Jaish al Islam (who want to rape & behead Syrian Christians and have done so) means that something has gone terribly wrong.
We reduce Raqqa Syria to rubble and killed thousands of civilians this past year, many buried under ruble. Just like the Syrian govt does. No one express moral qualms about it.
Syrians living there don’t want to be bombed by us and given over to McCain’s Jihadist head-choppers, that’s the fact.
This isn’t worth even a 1% chance of war with Russia.
I hope!
“Its all about Israel, a short distance away, and Iran and our renewed friend SA.”
Who’s threatening Israel? They have had better relations with Russia than us for the past 20 years, and have MUCH BETTER relations now.
Iran is a bunch of dicks, agreed - but if they’re the problem, perhaps attack them, rather than Russia.
Should I have gone for evil empire instead?

And another meltdown, the Evil Empire Reagan speech.
Keep them angry, Trump. Their anguish is in a way gratifying.
He said he was going to be unpredictable. This is as unpredictable as we can get.
I have misgivings, similar to Tucker Carlson about the provenance of the alleged gas attack. It just doesn’t make sense to provoke a superpower 2nd to none.
If it was Syria, it’s a cold and calculated move by the Russians. If it wasn’t, it was a false flag operation. It was triggered off of Trump saying we’re going to withdraw from Syria (BTW is a perfectly good announcement on any media). Twitter or otherwise. You don’t catch any grouse without beating the bush.
Just about every Islamic with a rocket.
For some crazy (to me anyway) reason(s) the Rooskies love them some Iranian mullahs. In Syria it seems Iran=Russia=Iran. It's more than complicated, it's crazy. Tamping down Iranian hegemony seems to require confrontation with the Rooskies.
