So, going back to Mao Tse Dung, Ho Chi Min, Fidel Castro and others, we always court/create monsters then we wind up trying to take them down?
So who is going to replace Assad?
Obama wanted to topple Assad. Trump just wants to keep him weak.
This has nothing to do with China and the Mid East. It’s about access to the Mediterranean Sea (ie. access to Europe).
Europe has already been infiltrated by an army of muslim refugees from Syria. Not an accident.
The prize for Russia and Iran is Europe, not the middle east. The only value that Syria has to offer is the strategic location to strike Europe. It offers nothing else.
Assad is just a figurehead at this point. If he is taken out nothing will change.
I really don’t care. That’s really not something we can dictate though I suspect we won’t like the choice but I don’t see how the international community avoids that, nor us, short of occupation. What we can do is make clear that the stick is ready to strike again if they are not good member of the international community.
What “International Community”?
I would say the one that matters—US, Canada, UK, France, and Germany as starters. NATO. Also, Australia and Japan. Anyway, those nations that share our basic values, especially as regards to use of chemical weapons.

Eh, I should restate that last:
To defuse this, what if Assad points the finger at & executes some “rogue general” (assuming we have no intel actually tying Assad directly to the gas attack)?
It can, but, it would seem the last strike was not sufficiently convincing. Plus Russia has upgraded and added to the anti-missile defenses significantly. It would seem that stronger "convincing" is needed.
As good a reason as any to start WW III, I suppose.
