The Boulder City Council on Thursday night unanimously passed on first reading an ordinance that bans the sale and possession of certain firearms defined as assault weapons.
The council adjourned following a more than five-hour-long meeting where nearly 150 people spoke for and against the proposed ordinance, which would also prohibit high-capacity magazines and bump stocks, a device that allows a semi-automatic weapon to be fired more like a fully automatic rifle.
Council members will deliberate the measure at a future meeting and possibly pass it twice more before it becomes an enshrined Boulder ordinance.
The proposed ban comes in the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman High School shooting in Parkland, Fla., in February that left 17 students and staff dead and sparked a renewed debate on gun control in the United States.
Councilwoman Jill Adler Grano proposed, and received support for, consideration of a ban and called it a "no-brainer" a sentiment that she stuck with on Thursday night just ahead of the vote.
"This is not a knee-jerk reaction," Adler Grano said. "If it were a knee-jerk reaction, it would have come after the first mass shooting and there have been hundreds. I think it's time to say 'enough.'"
She added that the proposed ordinance does not strip residents of their Second Amendment rights which was a fear expressed throughout the public hearing on Thursday because the Second Amendment doesn't guarantee the right to an assault rifle.

The stupid is strong with this one.
It's all "for the children".
They are not stupid. They are evil.
Theres no guarantee in the constitution for abortion either.
Its a no-brainer to ban it as its guranteed fatal everytime.
The headline isn’t correct. This is Boulder, Colorado, a liberal $hithole enclave to Denver. The “law” isn’t surprising there since the place is home to the University of Colorado, aka “The Union of Soviet Socialist Boulder” or “Berzerkeley in the Rockies.”
Boulder City is in Nevada where I doubt this subject would ever come up.
Gun violence
Gee guns just stand up and shout themselves huh ?
Assault weapons
Gee weapons are out assaulting people too ?
The liberals constantly come up with nonsense phrases and repeat them
Notice how they don’t say knife violence in England
Even though they banned guns and the muere rate is like 7 per day by knives
How about Muslim control ?

It depends upon how you read it. It's the City Council of Boulder being spoken of...or, to put it another way, the Boulder City Council.
More like an evil s $|thole extension of denver which is the san fransicko of the rockies.
>>Boulder City is in Nevada where I doubt this subject would ever come up.
I wouldn’t bet your life on it if I were you
here we go- state after state after state are now going to ignore the constitution and ban AR-15’s and other semi-automatic rifles and ammo clips
“here we go- state after state after state are now going to ignore the constitution and ban AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles and ammo clips”
They’re saying that ‘assault rifles’ aren’t a part of the 2nd. My rifle club is in Boulder and they would dearly love to shut it down.
[[Theyre saying that assault rifles arent a part of the 2nd.]]
I’d like to see them prove that they aren’t included in our inalienable right to defend ourselves- i know they claim that, but there is no proof that certain guns are not covered by consitution- i9nfact, our founding fathers made it clear that just the opposite is meant by the consitution-
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty.... The right of self defense is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any color or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction.
- St. George Tucker, Blackstones Commentaries on the Laws of England, 1803
by trying to narrow what we are allowed to own, the government is attempting to disarm us of them ost effective means necessary for self defense- they are attempting to nullify our liberty
“by trying to narrow what we are allowed to own, the government is attempting to disarm us of them ost effective means necessary for self defense- they are attempting to nullify our liberty”
They’re getting away with it in city after city and our courts are backing them up.
[[Theyre getting away with it in city after city and our courts are backing them up.]]
Yup- we are slowly but surely losing our second amendment rights. They know they can’t outright ban all guns because the people Would revolt if there was an outright total ban- so they are banning guns slowly because most people will comply thinkin it won;t get much worse- little do they realize-
“”This is not a knee-jerk reaction,” Adler Grano said.”
Yeah, just like the “lady” sleeping with multiple men isn’t a whore, but is just “keeping options open.” and “we’re just friends.”
This is how the left wins. They define everything to fit their agenda and use rhetoric to scare people. Overall, the left is slowly rewriting the Constitution.
" If you read the paper today, it is a complete lie. There were 80 opposed to the ordinance and only 30 in favor. They need to print a retraction. We voted unanimously to move forward on discussions, but not to approve anything. The paper did not make that very clear either.
My hope, is that if people want this to move forward, they will attempt to get the signatures required to put it on the ballot for people to vote, rather than Council making the decisions, when so many people are clearly against it.
Thank you for being involved. "
One thing that I noticed immediately during the session was that there were a large number of self-described Progressives and Liberals who spoke agains the proposal.
This seems to be quite a bit more complicated than I thought.
