A 78-year-old homeowner has been arrested by murder detectives after a suspected burglar he fought with in his own kitchen died of a stab wound.
The pensioner was upstairs asleep with his wife when he was woken by the two men breaking into his suburban home in Hither Green, south-east London last night.
He was forced into his kitchen by one of the men, who was armed with a screwdriver, before a struggle ensued.
The intruder, a 38-year-old man, was left with wounds to his chest and local residents say he collapsed in a neighbouring road and died in hospital.

And the law of England has so particular and tender a regard to the immunity of a man's house, that it stiles it his castle, and will never suffer it to be violated with immunity: agreeing herein with the sentiments of ancient Rome, as expressed in the works of Tully; quid enim sanctius, quid omni religione munitius, quam domus unusquisque civium?
That Englad is long gone.

Criminals are a vital demographic to the Left in this country.
How do we know the intruder didn't want to adjust the hinges on the kitchen cabinets?
Well,if convicted, the elderly gent most likely won't be imprisoned long. In Britain, a "life sentence" generally means 12-14 years. Sentences for murder are pretty much on par with what a criminal gets for armed robbery. It's insane.
I guess he was supposed to make a cup of tea for them as they robbed the place.
See the story of farmer Tony Martin, who shot a burglar, was sent to prison, and then was sued by the burglar for lost wages due to his gunshot wounds.
This Google search of Free Republic will show more stories from early 2000 about the incident.

I certainly hope this man is not charged. But it is the UK, so...
I doubt murder charges would even be considered in a similar situation in the United States - even in the most far-left, socialistic, lib-tardish of our 50 states.

Was it an Assault Philips or Assault Slot screwdriver?
Utterly insane. You are right. England as we knew it - the England that survived the Blitz and many other conflicts - is long gone. Dead. It is now a zombie of its former self.
So if he is found guilty and is now 78, he could be a free man by the time he is 90 or 92.
It turned in to armed robbery as soon as the pair of thieves holding a dangerous implement accosted the pensioner.
One witness claimed the lethal puncture injury was an inch in width, also claimed the escapee of the pair ditched a knife on the street upon driving away from his injured accomplice.
