We have precisely two. We have a few icebreaking tugs, and none of the great lakes breakers are still in commission.
Polar Star and the Healy are it. Canada’s got loads of breakers.
We’re supposed to get some new ones. The keel on Star was laid in 1970.
None of the Great Lakes breakers are still in commission? Then I wonder what phantom ships have been breaking ice in Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior, the St. Mary’s River in northern Lake Huron, and the Straights of Mackinac between lakes Huron and Michigan for the past 3 weeks. I’m certain that the USCG and the CCG would like to know that they don’t have any ice breakers in the Great Lakes any more.
