In February 2009, the Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization Act of 2009 was signed, extending CHIP through 2013. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) extended CHIP an additional two years through 2015. In 2015, the law was reauthorized again. Among many provisions, the laws extend the authorization of the federal CHIP program for an additional two years, through September 30, 2017.
States are prohibited from implementing eligibility standards, methodologies or procedures that are more restrictive than those in place as of March 23, 2010, with the exception of waiting lists for enrolling children in CHIP.
States receive an enhanced federal match that exceeds the federal match for state Medicaid funding. From 2015-2016, CHIP allocated over $25.5 billion to help states insure low-income children who are ineligible for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance.
