It is plausible. It is called dissociation.
A case of dissociative craziness is the case of David Hogg who is exploited and sacrificed as a militant whore for his parents’ own agenda at the expense of his own well being, regardless he is harmed by droping out of school without a future or being attractive to a woman.
The victim does not believe he or she is a victim and another false-adult protective personality takes over, sometimes lashing out at innocent people who happen to not be attracted by the kid or other third party existential threats.
