None of what the communists did prior to the Nazi’s was doable without gun confiscation. The Nazi’s were not the originator of the pattern...the Bolsheviks were. But, in true German style the most efficient at implementing it.

In the “what if” game, one has to wonder how far the Bolsheviks would have gone has WW2 not intervened. Would they have implemented their own version of the Final Solution had they the opportunity? I think that what the Bolsheviks would have done would have made Hitler look like a piker.

They were already doing it! Started with Lenin and the clerical class, landowners and the nobility. Later came Stalin who exterminated all his former friends ('Old Bolsheviks), then deported whole ethnicities (or as many of them as they could lay hands on) the Chechens, Kalmuks, Tartars and others...later came the turn of the Poles, Ukrainians, etc; when that devil died the Jews were teed up to be next. The communists did everything the Nazis did, but they did it for a longer time, over a greater geographical area, and to far more people. The reds taught the hitlerites everything they knew.
