Vice President Mike Pence referred to Minnesota as America's "Star of the North" during a speech at a tax policy event Wednesday in Minneapolis.
Pence spoke for close to 30 minutes to hundreds of supporters at the Minneapolis Convention Center. A crowd lined up as early as 7:30 a.m. to get in. Supporters said the event felt like a campaign stop.
Pence touted items he said President Donald Trump and the administration have made progress on. And he pointed out how he believes the recent tax cut package is impacting people in the state.
"When you add it all together, all told, we think these tax cuts will save the typical family of four here in Minnesota about $3,000 a year in your taxes," Pence said.
Mike Thonbold of Cokato was on hand for the speech. He said his employer is passing the benefits felt by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act along.
"The tax cuts, they make a real difference in our lives," Thonbold said. "They've been able to give us a bonus and it's really cool. It really hits home in your paycheck."
The vice president touched on the opportunities he said the tax cuts created for Minnesotans.
"Since Election Day, businesses across Minnesota have created 7,600 new, good paying, manufacturing and construction jobs all across this state," Pence said. Randall Thom, a Trump supporter from Lakefield, said the speech energized him.
"The Trump administration is wanting to make sure us forgotten people are heard," Thom said after the event.
According to the Minnesota Republican Party, Pence choose to highlight Minnesota with a visit for a reason. "We are one of the most important states this election cycle on a national federal level, and also on a state level with the open governor's race," state GOP chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan said.
But opponents fired back at claims Pence made about the tax cuts.
Before the event, DFL party chairman Ken Martin released a statement, saying in part: "It takes from hardworking Minnesotans to give massive tax breaks to the wealthy."
Democratic U.S. Representative Betty McCollum also responded to Pence's visit by saying that "the sunny vision of the Trump administration that Vice President Mike Pence told Minnesotans today is completely at odds with the stormy reality."
Trump came within 1% of winning MN in 2016.
Its a doable pickup in 2020.
Lots of votes on the Iron Range.
They do like jobs up there.
But, they continue to vote Dem, for what reason, I have no idea.
