While possibly true literally, it is also a perfect metaphor. “On the stage” gives her some leverage with the left to say that her impending indictment is politically motivated by the opposition to prevent her impending victory (you know, like what she tried with Trump & Russia, Russia, Russia). Once she is off the political stage, even her former compatriots will be happy to throw her under the bus to save themselves. But not while she still has the means of retaliation.
