Heineken, in response to allegations of racism, has pulled its “lighter is better” ad promoting the beer giant’s Heineken Light from TV and internet spots. The ad shows a bartender sliding a beer down the bar past three people who are all black. The beer then stops in front of a lighter-skinned woman after displaying the words “Sometimes, lighter is better” on the screen. The ad has been removed from Heineken’s HEINY, -0.92% official channels but has been re-posted by others. Naturally, the internet went into a fury upon viewing the ad — both in support and against Heineken.

Not everyone is aware that among blacks there is sometimes discrimination by lighter-skinned blacks against darker-skinned blacks. And vice versa. This hearkens back the days when there were the so-called “house-negroes” and outside slaves such as field workers. The slaves who worked inside were considered privileged by those outside. They had more comforts and advantages. The women were also more likely to end up with children from the white men.
A very high percentage of blacks who are descendants of slaves today are also descendants of slave owners. Conversely, many whites today do not have ancestry that owned slaves and may even have ancestry that included white slaves, such as the Irish who were bought and sold in the US along with blacks.
Because the subject matter is so loaded with emotions, assumptions, and dogmas, it is often difficult to have a productive conversation about it.

Aside: we can be sure beer is usually in the country legally because they collect taxes on entry.
Clearly if we want the DC to enforce the border (which they don’t care about) we need to make it about something they do care about: charge a fee per head to enter the country and additional monthly fees for non-citizens to remain.
Once it’s about taxes (and tax dodgers) they’ll enforce it.
