NEA in 1941 bought (from 4H) and published The American Citizens Handbook. It was full of quotes from the Bible, Magna Carta, Constitution, Founders, patriotic writings, poetry and songs, etc.
They killed it in 1669 and sent the remaining 10,000 or so copies to a NY landfill. No pubic school teacher would dare read aloud from it today.
As for PTA, they have high teacher membership. A PTA that seriously goes against an NEA position will lose the teachers dues and participation. A teacher clued me in on that many years ago, when our PTA took issue with gay is OK posters in the school.
