Engineering experts say investigators looking into the collapsed instant bridge in Miami will want to know why a central tower which is usually built to support a suspension bridge was not in place when it collapsed onto Tamiami Trail on Thursday afternoon.
Last week, Florida International Universitys official Twitter account posted a rendering of the bridge in its completed form as envisioned by the planners before its opening to foot traffic in early 2019.
The rendering shows a tall central column with cables connecting it to the main span.
Engineers say the design is known as a cable-stayed bridge, which is a kind of suspension bridge, according to USA Today.

If rebar was used we should see some twisted ends sticking out of the debris. But photos have not been focused in enough out of respect, while people are still being recovered. Their bodies anyways.
They spent $11 million on that bridge?
I could have build them a wooden one that would have lasted for hundreds of years for a million.
Here’s a video about the bridge construction by Juan Browne, who is pretty sharp about things engineering. He did a great series on the Oroville Dam spillway failure last year.
In short, the bridge was NOT to be a true suspension bridge as I had thought. The suspension pieces aren’t even cables but are pipes with little support role. They serve more to dampen vibrations and movement from pedestrian traffic.
interesting, thanks for the link
