The Latest: Lamb confident absentee ballots will go his way

Democrat Conor Lamb, who has a razor-thin lead over Republican Rick Saccone in Pennsylvania’s special congressional election, says he’s confident he’ll be the ultimate winner.

With some absentee ballots still being counted, Lamb told CNN Wednesday his campaign had made a push to help voters get absentee ballots.

Lamb told CNN he has not yet heard from Saccone, but added, “I congratulate him on fighting hard the whole way.”

Asked about his strong showing in a Republican district that Donald Trump carried by 20 points in 2016, Lamb said, “This is my home. You call it a red district, I call it western Pennsylvania.”

Trump campaigned for Saccone last weekend, urging voters not to “be conned by this guy Lamb.” Asked about Trump’s remarks, Lamb said, “There was a lot of foolishness in this election and a lot of really cartoonish campaigning, and I think by the time of the president’s visit…there was just a little bit of burnout on that type of campaigning.”

But Lamb says there are still “plenty of people here who are still pretty supportive” of Trump.

Local news reporting this morning that many people in Allegheny County tried to vote for Saccone and Lamb's name kept coming up. Officials say something to the effect "that happens once in a while." Republicans have lawyers on the case. Just more voter fraud to get a rat in office.

At one point it was a 99 vote margin. What is it today?

Unless the Democrats find a bunch of Lamb ballots in the trunk of somebody’s car the most likely outcome is about a fifty/fifty split. This is a nail-biter.

Simple question. If he’s so conservative why is he a Democrat?

When you win by 20 points like Trump did, you don't have to worry about absentee ballots going your way.

The GOP really needs to start getting behind candidates who are more like President Trump and less like the establishment wanks that Trump beat in the primary.

I mean, if they'd like to win elections instead of losing them, something I'm not entirely sure the congressional GOP wants to do.

They would rather the Democrat act like he supports Trump policies instead. Pubes are stupid... even as a uniparty they get ripped off.

Because these Pennsylvania voters aren't going to elect a Pelosi clone.

Plus, Democrats are smarter that Republicans are. They allow their candidates to campaign as moderates and then go crazy Left once elected. We make our guys declare crazy right out of the gate or else they get labeled RINOs. "He wanted to ban all abortions without exception AND put gays in prison! How did he lose?"

But that’s what they do. Just Ask Franken.

Lamb didn’t face a primary challenge from the left, so he was able to get away with pretending he was a moderate from the get go.

He likely won’t have that luxury next time around.

Why voters don’t see through these pretenders is beyond me. Manchin’s been able to get away with this malarkey for years. He runs as a conservative, then becomes Pelosi’s lackey when in DC. If you want to vote for a conservative, why not vote for the real thing, not a pretender?

The 18th district is set to be absorbed into two neighboring districts before the next election. Lamb’s fate after that is up in the air.

Why fight half a battle?

Name a Republican who has ever governed more conservatively than he or she campaigned, it just doesn’t happen under any circumstance. I can’t think of a single one. I can, however, think of plenty of Democrats who campaigned to the right and governed to the left, it’s practically all of them unless they’re from a very liberal state.

After midnight with all precincts reporting, unofficial results had Lamb leading Republican state Rep. Saccone by fewer than 600 votes. More than 1,000 absentee ballots were still being tabulated as the count carried into Wednesday.

Almost all of those had been counted by the time Lamb was declared the apparent winner around 6:15 local. Those military and overseas votes only total a few dozen, so even if Saccone takes all of them it isn't going to change the outcome. Unless they can find some mistakes in the tallying then a recount won't change things.

“Simple question. If he’s so conservative why is he a Democrat?”

He comes from a prominent Dem family. My simple question is why did anyone in the 18th district for Lamb? Trump/GOP killed Obama EO’s declaring coal dead. Trump is bring steel production back, brought sanity to the EPA, cut taxes, driven unemployment for whites, blacks, Hispanics to record lows. Yet, fifty percent of the voters voted for Lamb who says he’s going to be like a Republican. Why not vote for the real deal? Go figure, I sure as hell can’t......

Simple answer. He's not that conservative. He's a moderate Democrat.
