There are very different interpretations by modern rabbis. Only the Hasidic Jews still observe the strict laws against abortion. Nearly every one of my female Jewish relatives have had abortions, and brag openly of the fact. I wonder how their living children feel about this.
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, the leading halachic authority in several generations, is not a hasidic Jew. Far from it.
