Other sources are reporting that McEntee couldn't get a permanent security clearance. Was there something odd in McEntee's background? Or is the clearance process hopelessly backed-up?

I think you are on to something. There was a report on FR recently also saying that and IIRC indicating that some on the inside had said as much.

If it was a delay then why fire him now? It has to be something in his background made it clear he wasn’t going to get the security clearance under any normal circumstances. Part of the Kelly crackdown on temporary clearances?
