> Its easy to look at whats happening in Washington DC and despair
I didn’t read the NYT article, but this is the type of general statement liberals make. I want to know WHAT they are despairing about? What is happening or even better, what bad results have occurred.
Have the tax cuts hurt anyone?
Has Trump’s foreign or domestic policies hurt anyone in any specific way?
A LOT has happened in little over a year. What’s to despair about so far? Policy toward transgenders in the military? Treatment of illegals? Give us specifics so we can have a discussion and understand each other better rather than just “DESPAIR”.
> to remind myself that the United States had a progressive, African American president
As with Trump, give us specifics. What accomplishments did this “progressive, African American” have that you like? Was Obamacare working for you? The Iran deal? Race relations? Fast & Furious?
The presidency is more than symbolic - or it should be. And elections are more than a tribal competition. Let’s talk about specifics rather than turning it into the equivalent of a sports championship with “my team wins = good, and my team loses = bad”. Eagles fans can feel bad until the next Super Bowl. Democrats need to get past their loss and participate in the government the people elected. That means having discussions and debates on specific issues, not simply despairing over EVERYTHING.

that's just weird. I'll never get the Left's worship of their political flunkies.

Not to be picky, but that quote originated not from Chesterton but is a statement made by Emile Cammaert writing about Chesterton.

Right. And as long as the switch is in the Off position...it won’t vibrate.

One thing we can be sure of — the doll isn’t anatomically correct.

Right you are - thanks for the correction.
I do prefer to be as accurate as possible on details, although I do take some comfort in the fact that Chesterton himself usually got the heart of the matter correct, even though he could be a bit sloppy on some of the precise facts supporting his arguments.
