In the post-Parkland hysteria, President Trump directed the Department of Justice to perform some regulatory legerdemain where bump fire stocks are concerned. The ATF had long ago passed on the stocks, deeming them perfectly legal accessories for semi-automatic rifles. Now, in a Saturday morning move apparently meant to fly under the radar . . .
The U.S. Department of Justice formally submitted a regulation on Saturday to ban “bump stocks,” a modification to high-capacity rifles that lets them fire like an automatic weapon.
President Donald Trump signed a memorandum in February directing the department to make the regulatory change, which must now be approved by the Office of Management and Budget before it is published and subject to a commentary period.
Nothing to worry about though…that will never get through Congress! Au contraire, mon frere.
The move does not require congressional approval, allowing the administration to side-step what could have been insurmountable pressure from pro-gun groups such as the National Rifle Association that have worked to erode changes in firearm laws in the wake of mass shootings in Florida and Nevada.
It’s no biggie, though. Really, now many people own, or even want a bump fire stock? This won’t affect me!
Think again. If the DOJ can use regulatory fiat to bring their ban hammer down on bump fire stocks, magically deeming them machine guns, what’s to stop this or, more likely, some future administration from deciding that “high-capacity” 30-round magazines are also unacceptable modifications that facilitate “unnecessary” rates of fire? Or lighter, drop-in triggers? Anything that could plausibly be argued to increase a gun’s “standard” rate of fire.
The NRA was on board with regulating bump fire stocks in theory, but hadn’t signed on to this particular move. This sets a terrible regulatory precedent that will almost surely be expanded and abused again down the road. Will the NRA sue? Will SAF or the GOA?
We haven’t been able to get our mitts on the new DOJ regulatory language yet, but will publish it when it’s available. Stay tuned.
Neither does the president get to make law.

If you can watch this video and still say that the this AR15, with a Bump Stock engaged, isn’t an automatic gun or machine gun, then you’re on drugs.
I don’t care much about bump stocks, but I don’t like this.
Heck, Jerry Miculek can make a six shooter like a machine gun. Will they outlaw him next?
Outlawing objects does nothing when the people with bad intent are not deal with. Other than possibly a Nambu, no gun has ever just fired on it’s own without some one operating it. Until this is understood, no honest person will be safe from a gun control zealot.

I have been maintaining here from the recent first appearance of “bump-fire stocks”, that Obama’s administration declared them legal to attack the ownership of all semi-automatic firearms. All semi-autos can be bump-fired, with or without bump-fire stock.

Do YOU think they are machine guns? How fast can you fire?
Maybe you can explain why the EPA, the IRS, the BATFE, the department of education and nearly every local police departments ALL have machine guns. Since you know what a machine gun is and what they are used for please explain why dozens of government agencies and the police need them but the American People should be banned from having them.
I pointed this out to a gun grabber on another forum once. He replied that all revolvers should be banned.
It seems to me that it is a lot easier to autofire with a bump stock than a binary trigger setup.

Relax slim...who said anything about law enforcement. What’s your point?
What about rubber bands? Those can be used for the same purpose.
I had to look up what a binary trigger is - interesting. (Fires upon pulling AND releasing of the trigger - about $600 for the trigger assembly.)
Here in the state of Washington some guy was pushing a bill to ban bump stocks along with another three pages of stuff - including “modifications to triggers to increase their rate of fire”. Of course the way the law was written, that could have meant having your trigger smoothed out by a gunsmith.
It didn’t even get pushed through the session luckily. Although last year the law to keep guns out of felon’s hands passed. It outlaws private gun sales. Of course - in the the 18 pages of the law, it also makes it illegal to let your buddy shoot your gun down at the gun range! Seriously. (Of course nobody worries about it.)
Think of the comedy. You can now get wrestled to the ground and cuffed for carrying around a hollow piece of wood shaped like a gun stock and making machine gun noises. Your defense will be, “I didn’t install the spring on the bottom, Judge.”
