A US guided missile destroyers deadly collision with an oil tanker near Singapore in 2017 was caused by a sudden turn made by the warship that put it in the path of the commercial vessel, said a report by the Singapore government Thursday.
The collision on Aug. 21, which killed 10 sailors and was one of a handful of incidents in the Asia Pacific region involving US Navy warships, raised questions about Navy training and led to the removal of a number of officers.
The collision between the USS John S McCain (JSM) and Alnic MC (AM) as they were transiting through the Singapore Strait happened because of a sudden turn to Port by JSM, which caused it to head into the path of AM, the report said.

“””IMO if they had simply maintained speed, or even increased speed, they would have crossed the bow. It might have been close, but no hit.”””
And by doing so the JSM would have entered the Singapore outbound lanes and would have been clobbered on it starboard side by an outbound ship.
The marine traffic in and out of Singapore is like a multilane interstate highway. There were many ships heading into Singapore that morning and the JSM cut across the inbound lanes and got hit.
I am certain many people have seen the car driver who cuts across several freeway lanes to take an exit.
The JSM would have seen the traffic ahead and behind them. With the CO and XO both on the deck that morning, the JSM steered their ship across the traffic lanes and got hit.
Gross incompetence is the only logical cause for 10 dead sailors.
Was it a sudden turn to the left?
ten people died.............ergo someone or “ones” need to be prosecuted as SOMEONE was responsible for this!
How the hell does the Navy think a few command changes is enough.............I don’t .............people DIED !!!
Un-necessarily.
Something “Flagrant” happened. Perhaps drugs, perhaps booze, perhaps sex, perhaps marijuana, people absent from positions...........SOMETHING!...........and the Navy is embarrassed and when they get embarrassed they cover up!
Thanks...
Well, some OODs are pricks. I saved an ops boss from having his legs broken in Australia. The crew had taken up a collection to have him kneecapped and medievac’d off. I found the money, and forced the RMC to give it back.
Stupid on my part.
I was a prick as TAO, but I kept the CO and XO out of CIC. I was also not OPS but WEPS; you really don’t want to piss off the Weapons Officer. Gives ‘kneecapping’ a whole new meaning.
