It’s not settled. Before the iron fist of the sainted Lincoln came down, secession was not a question. It had been threatened before and simply not carried out. But no one griped about it.
Why on earth would we forbid separation when that is what we did ourselves?
Further, why would one want to force “union” with those who have such enmity against the rest?

These are the kind of views that result from the failure of government to prosecute lawbreakers.
I cannot believe that any of the thirteen original states agreed to join a union from which they knew they could never withdraw. Those who say they believe this are simply deluding themselves.
