Lately I have been hearing that used by many people and I don’t think it has anything to do with gender (at least I believe on the normal people speaking). It’s just poor grammar which is an epidemic.

It’s just poor grammar which is an epidemic.My impression has always been that this usage of "they" is an early attempt at having a "gender-neutral" singular pronoun that isn't "it."
